The World's First Flight Show: Shivkar Bapuji Talpade

Ancient India has been the birthplace of numerous scientific discoveries, and one of its proudest moments came with the pioneering work of Pandit Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, who conducted the world's first flight test. Talpade, born in Mumbai, was a devoted scholar of the Vedas and exhibited an inventive spirit from a young age, particularly drawn to the subject of aviation.

Inspired by Swami Dayanand Saraswati's references to "Vedic Air Vidya," Talpade embarked on a quest to revive ancient knowledge of aviation, delving into rare texts alongside other Sanskrit Pandits. He received significant support from Subayya Shastri, a distinguished scholar, and financial backing from Maharaj Sayajirao Gaikwad of Baroda, a passionate advocate for science.

Talpade’s creation, the "Marutsakha," meaning "Friend of the Wind," was an aircraft measuring six feet long and four feet wide, designed based on his studies of the Vedas. With local police permission secured, a notable gathering was organized for the flight demonstration, attended by prominent figures such as Maharaj Sayajirao Gaikwad, Lokmanya Tilak, and various community leaders.

During the experiment, Talpade successfully launched the Marutsakha, which ascended to about fifteen feet within five minutes. The audience erupted in applause, celebrating this unprecedented achievement in aviation. However, the triumph was short-lived. The British authorities, feeling threatened by Talpade's innovation and his connection to Sayajirao, began to exert pressure on the Maharaj to withdraw support.

As tensions rose, the Riley Brothers, representatives of a London company, approached Talpade, promising financial support for further experiments. Trusting them, he shared his documentation, only to discover later that they had passed his ideas to the Wright Brothers, resulting in betrayal and a significant setback for Talpade.

In 1907, amidst these challenges, Pandit Talpade published "Discovery of Ancient Aviation Art," shedding light on his research and achievements. His pioneering work remains a testament to India's rich legacy in science and innovation, highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of Indian visionaries to the field of aviation.
